Cheree Stokes is a self-taught Contemporary Aboriginal Artist whose original works tell the story of her journey back home. Born during the “Stolen Generation” era, Cheree is the child and grandchild of a “Stolen One”. Her father, removed from his family, chose to raise her in “White Society” to give her a better chance at life, leaving her disconnected from her Aboriginal roots.
Cheree painted in a European style until 2016 when she felt drawn to her ancestral heritage and began creating traditional Aboriginal art. Her “Healing Works,” featuring bold colours, gold crosshatching, and 3-dimensional “healing dots®,” are meant to be touched for a calming effect.
Her award-winning works have been exhibited internationally and are part of private collections. Cheree also runs after-school art classes and public workshops, sharing her journey of reconnection. She opened her own studio/gallery in Trundle, NSW, in 2020, and resides in Northern NSW with her pets.
